Visual Support and Makaton

Resources

The resources available below are useful guidance for working with all children, but are especially important when supporting those with socio-communication issues, including Autistic Spectrum Disorders.

CPD Opportunities

  • Using Visuals with children – course code: E-VIS
  • Makaton training workshops

The Makaton Level 1 and Level 2 workshops will continue to run across the county on a rolling programme once face to face training can resume. Places on these events are limited to two practitioners per setting and it is recommended that the keyperson and Senco attend this training and then cascade the information back to their staff. These events are not available as in setting training as the vast majority of settings have already received Makaton training.

  • Makaton In Practice in-setting training course code: E-MIP

Where the majority of staff in a setting have already completed some formal training, the setting can request the in-setting training Makaton In Practice, course code E-MIPinsetting. This training is designed to help practitioners refresh and revise their knowledge of Makaton and to identify useful vocabulary for individual children and to practise everyday applications e.g. as part of the routine, at snack times, story times, during activities. This is currently being offered as a virtual 2 hour event.

The below staff meeting revision plan has been created to support teams where staff or the majority or staff have already accessed Makaton training, but require specific revision and planning activities to enhance the visual communication support in the setting.
