There is an expectation that children can access technology and use it safely. Online safety is highlighted within the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) 2021 and Early Years Inspection Handbook 2019.
The EYFS 2021 (paragraph 3.4) states that:
- The setting’s safeguarding policy and procedures must cover the use of mobile phones and cameras in the setting. To safeguard children and practitioners online, providers will find it helpful to refer to Safeguarding children and protecting professionals in early years settings: online safety considerations – GOV.UK (www.gov.uk)
Ofsted ‘Inspecting Safeguarding in Early Years’ (2019) section 13:
- Leaders oversee the safe use of technology when children and learners are in their care and take action immediately if they are concerned about bullying or children’s well-being.
- Leaders of early years settings implement the required policies with regard to the safe use of mobile phones and cameras in settings.
