The Early Years and Childcare Service recommend all providers adopt a universal screening approach using the WellComm toolkit. This could begin with screening all children aged 3–4 years, with a gradual expansion to younger age groups, working towards the goal of screening all children annually. A universal approach endeavours to ensure that language and communication needs are identified promptly, supporting improved outcomes for all children.

Receptive language barriers (the ability to understand spoken language) are often described as an “invisible need”because children may appear to be coping by using strategies such as copying others, guessing from context, or relying on familiar routines. As part of the WellComm screening process, these receptive language barriers can be identified and monitored.

How to use the WellComm Toolkit

1. Complete screening for all children (starting with age 3-4 year olds)
2. Children to be rescreened yearly to monitor children’s progress
3. Targeted support put in place where needed, using WellComm’s Big Book of Ideas
4. Children with targeted support in place should be rescreened every 12 weeks

If common themes are identified, these can be addressed with all children in the setting through careful planning  as well as targeted support.

WellComm Packs available to loan

We are able to provide a WellComm pack on a loan basis to Childminders and settings who do not currently have access to a WellComm pack.
