Religious Education (RE) aims to develop religious ‘literacy’; it should empower pupils to have meaningful, informed interactions with people of different beliefs, both religious and non-religious.
Religious Education (RE) is statutory; all registered pupils in full-time education have an entitlement to learn about the diversity of religions and worldviews in our global community.
Suffolk maintained schools must teach RE according to The Suffolk Agreed Syllabus 2023. Academies and Free Schools may use this syllabus or choose a different Agreed Syllabus. Catholic Schools must follow their Diocesan syllabus.
Schools must develop their own scheme of work (or buy and adapt one) to match the syllabus. The syllabus contains guidance for creating a scheme, and reference to a full primary school scheme, matched to the syllabus and available to buy. For information regarding the Emmanuel Project, please see The Emmanuel Project: RE Scheme of Work – EYFS TO Y6 – Suffolk Learning.

Suffolk SACRE oversees local provision of both RE and Collective Worship, and its teacher and faith community members may be able to offer some advice and help to schools. For more information about SACRE, please see SACRE – Suffolk Learning.
