A number of schools have taken part in projects to increase engagement and outcomes of pupils with EAL in our Suffolk schools:
- Increase engagement with families project: to engage with non-English speaking parents/families to increase their levels of their confidence in the English language and build better relationships between families, the school and the community.
- Friendship project: to foster friendships and develop a sense of belonging for EAL pupils within school
- ‘I Am History’ project: researching and showcasing a culturally diverse group of pupil’s heritage and history. To ensure they are represented/reflected in the school/curriculum/community and to nurture their sense of belonging and of feeling valued. Thus increasing confidence, engagement and the value pupils place on their education.
- Engage EAL parents and the local refugee community through audio books: The project developed story telling skills, oracy and inclusion through the use of audio book devices. It promoted inclusion by giving the opportunity for children to celebrate and use native languages and allowed children to see themselves and other cultures represented within the stories.
- Developing language for maths project: delivering the necessary language skills to enable EAL pupils to access the maths curriculum and build their Maths base so that they are able to access teaching at the right level and with confidence quickly.
