Teachers’ Standards in England from September 2012

The Teachers’ Standards came into force on 1 September 2012. They replace the Core (Induction) Standards previously published by the TDA. The Teachers’ Standards apply to all teachers regardless of their career stage, and define the minimum level of practice expected of teachers from the point of being awarded QTS.  The Teachers’ Standards will be used to assess an NQT’s/ECT’s performance throughout their induction period. The decision about whether an NQT/ECT has met the Standards to a satisfactory level by the end of the induction period will be made on the basis of:

* What can reasonably be expected of an NQT/ECT working in the relevant setting and circumstances, within the framework set out by the Standards

* An expectation that NQTs/ECTs have effectively consolidated their training and are demonstrating their ability to meet the Standards consistently and over a sustained period of time

* Demonstration that their practice is consistent with the definition set out in the Preamble, and that they have met both Part 1 and Part 2 of the Standards.
