Reducing the Induction Period in recognition of previous teaching experience and exceptional circumstances

Paragraph 3.2 – 3.5 of Induction for Early Career Teachers (England): Statutory Guidance for Appropriate Bodies, Head Teachers, School Staff and Governing Bodies (2021) provides discretion for Appropriate Bodies (ABs) to reduce the length of the induction period to a minimum of one term (based on a 3 term school year). This regulation is designed for exceptional circumstances and will inevitably apply on a less regular basis.

The reduced induction period document is designed to help schools assess whether exceptional circumstances might apply and sets out a protocol for schools wishing to apply to the AB for consideration of this. The AB will visit the school to evaluate the evidence.
